Baraka Natural Aquarium - Nungwi, Nungwi, Tanzania
Half day trip
The Zanzibar Turtles tour is a remarkable marine focussed tour which aims to introduce you to the most endangered species – Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas) and Hawkbills (Eretmochelys Imbricata). We do this tour in a village of Nungwi where a conservation project is established to protect Turtles from becoming extinct. Currently the turtle population is subject to the threat of killing for food by local impoverished people .
The conservation effort and tourism provide alternative employment opportunity which is much needed. Many efforts are made to educate the fishermen villagers about the importance of supporting the efforts to protect the Turtles rather than regarding them as a source of food. Jambo Africa is doing its part to make the situation sustainable by developing access to the turtles as a tourist attraction. Visitors from many different parts of the world now come to visit and enjoy close up interactions with the turtles.
Raising awareness and engaging with the villagers has led to an economic boom for the villagers ever since the preservation of these endangered animals was launched in Nungwi . Now the cases of fishermen and locals catching turtles to eat has reduced to almost zero. The emphasis now is to bring the caught turtle to the Turtles Aquarium . If you visit the Centre you can expect to see various species and sizes of turtles and enjoy an interaction with them which including feeding and swimming together this comes after you finish a Nungwi Village tour of which Turtle is within.
