Bagamoyo is old town founded in the end of the 18 century although it is an extension of a much older in 8th century settlement. This old town lies in the north of Dar es salaam city about 75 kilomentres, this town gained its name from slave masters cruel message to slaves which stated “Bwaga Moyo chini” meant “Lay down Your heart” was an orderly message telling them to lose their hopes of coming back neither to their homes nor the life they were used to.
Kaole ruins is one among the tourist attraction dating 12 century was the old fort built in 1860 was once embarkation port for slaves from hinterland, who were to be shipped to Zanzibar Islands for auction and laboring in coconut and clove plantations in Unguja and Pemba. This is because Bagamoyo became a trading port for ivory and slave trade, and therefore it was an entry point for Arab, European missionaries, explorer and traders in East and Central Africa.
This tour was designed to introduce you to some very important sites like first Roman Catholic Church in East Africa built around 1868 used as a base to run a camp of about 650 freed slaves; the German colonial administration headquarters, the Boma, in the first capital of German East Africa; the Mission Museum displaying history of Bagamoyo; and the Livingstone Memorial Church among others. Bagamoyo white sand beaches are considered some of the finest on the whole of the East African coast.
